Our Cause

The underrepresentation of black ethnic minorities in the creative arts industry reflects entrenched inequalities within the sector. Despite constituting around 14% of the UK population, black individuals are notably absent from key creative roles, both on and off-screen. Reports from the Creative Diversity Network and the British Film Institute reveal stark figures, such as only 2.2% of TV professionals identifying as black and a mere 3% of UK films directed by black filmmakers between 2005 and 2019.

These disparities extend beyond representation to income discrepancies, as evidenced by research from PRS for Music indicating that BAME songwriters and composers earn 19% less than their white counterparts. Black creatives also encounter challenges in accessing funding and opportunities for their projects, limiting their ability to produce and distribute their work effectively.

Studies from the Runnymede Trust and the Trades Union Congress shed light on the barriers black actors and workers face, including typecasting, discrimination, and limited career advancement pathways. Financial inequalities highlighted by the UK government’s Race Disparity Audit further compound these challenges, affecting access to education, training, and networking within the performing arts.

Addressing these issues is crucial for creating a more equitable industry. By providing resources, scholarships, and mentorship programs, our charity aims to empower black individuals to pursue their creative aspirations and contribute meaningfully to the cultural and economic fabric of the UK. Additionally, promoting diverse representation not only enriches artistic narratives but also fosters greater societal understanding and empathy. Through these efforts, we strive to cultivate a more inclusive and diverse cultural landscape in the UK.
